Explore new places, see new sights
There is more than sun, sea and sand in Kalutara. Places to visit, and things to experience are aplenty. The Southern coastline itself offers a wealth of diversity whether you go further along the shores or inland towards the mountains. Nature, history, culture, or just people and places – whatever your interests may be, you will find much to see and do.
To experience typical coastal village life, spend a morning at the Kalutara fishing harbour. If you prefer to see bigger fish, take in a whale watching expedition at Mirissa – famed for spotting Blue Whales. The beaches of the South are a favoured nesting ground for endangered sea turtles. You can offer some much needed support towards local conservation efforts by visiting a turtle hatchery.
When you want to get away from the sea, head landward to explore Rubber or Tea plantations, spice gardens and rainforests; or the beautifully landscaped Bawa Botanical Gardens – all are within easy reach.
If culture and history are what interests you, join the devotees at Kalutara Temple: the only Buddhist shrine in the world that is entirely hollow inside. This much revered site is visited by pilgrims throughout the year. The imposing Richmond Castle nearby is a classic example of colonial architectural extravagance. Once home to a rich local family, its 99 exquisitely carved doors and 34 windows and other unique design features are still well preserved.
