Places to go, things to see…
Life is not just a beach on our beautiful Southern coast. You’ll find plenty of places to visit in Kalutara itself and a wealth of experiences to enjoy both nearby and further afield. Beyond the beaches, the scenery is truly picturesque – especially when you travel further inland into the lower slopes of the mountains. There, you can visit Rubber or Tea plantations, spice gardens and rainforests and the exquisite Bawa Botanical Gardens is located nearby.
Many places of cultural and historical interest are also yours to explore. Join the local pilgrims at the awe inspiring Kalutara Temple: the only Buddhist shrine in the world which is completely hollow inside where a sequence of 74 intricately drawn murals adorns the walls. Take a short drive inland to the Richmond Castle – an old colonial mansion with 99 exquisitely carved doors and 34 windows bearing witness to an era of architectural opulence.
If you wish to stay by the sea however, spend a morning at the Kalutara fishing harbour and experience typical coastal village life. For bigger fish, head down to Mirissa on a whale watching expedition, or go deep sea fishing on the Indian Ocean. The Southern beaches are also where the endangered sea turtles come to nest, and you can support the conservation efforts with a visit to the turtle hatchery.
